Ho’oku’ikahi Day, or Reconciliation Day, honors the justice, reconciliation, and nonviolence of Queen Lili’uokalani.
This year’s 26th anniversary event will be held at 7 p.m. on January 14, 2018 at Kawaiahaʻo Church, 957 Punchbowl St in Honolulu. For event details, see the related calendar item.
The day commemorates the anniversary of the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom, a 1993 public apology by the United Church of Christ to Na Kanaka Maoli at Iolani Palace and Kaumakapili Church, and a 1993 U.S. apology to Native Hawaiians made in Public Law 103-150. Ho’oku’ikahi Day has been commemorated each year since 1993. In 2014, the State Legislature established the official recognition date for Ho’oku’ikahi Day as January 17 of every year.
